Movie: Affliction (1999)

View Comments

Hollywood heavyweights Nick Nolte, James Coburn and Willem Dafoe star in Affliction, a powerful film that takes a look at the impact of growing up an with an abusive parent. The movie is directed by Paul Shrader and based on a novel by Russell Banks.

The story begins with a death in a small New Hampshire town. At first glance it seems that this might be a hunting accident, but as the investigation progresses it uncovers a series of revelations, particularly for one family in that little town.

Nick Nolte plays the Sheriff of that town, fighting a hard personal battle to emotionally connect with his girlfriend and daughter. Coburn plays Nolte's aging abusive and alcoholic father in a brilliant Oscar winning performance.

While we see only a few scenes of Coburn, and only small flashbacks of his terrorisng acts, we can easily relate to the fact that his character was abusive to his family. Dafoe plays his dispassionate brother who escapes his father's abuse by focussing his thoughts on books. The effects of abuse never disappear and cannot be swept under the rug.

This flick is a 'lost classic' and a must see. The end will take you by surprize. Don't miss it.
